Background Skyler O'Leary was born in 1861, the daughter of Jeremiah O'Leary and Sumer Shabo. Jeremiah, born in 1840, was the son of a plantation owner in Easley, South Carolina. He fell in love with Sumer, a slave on his father's plantation, born in 1842. Seeking to avoid the civil war, Jeremiah and Sumer fled to Chicago in 1861 where they married in secret, although interracial marriage was illegal at the time. Shortly after Skyler's birth, an angry lynch mob descended on O'Leary's small farm on the outskirts of Chicago, intent on killing Sumer and her daughter, and possibly Jeremiah as well for his betrayal of marrying a slave. The three hid in the family's barn as the mob set fire to it, hoping to kill them. In a desperate attempt to save her daughter, Sumer used an ancient artifact—a pocket watch she had managed to keep from her African ancestry—to open a portal in time and space. The watch operated on principles of the golden ratio, or phi. Sumer pushed the 10-year-old Skyler through the portal just as the barn collapsed around them from the flames. Skyler found herself transported 123 years into the future, to 1994 Chicago. With only her 19th-century clothes and her mother's enigmatic pocket watch, Skyler survived on the streets as an orphan for several years before entering the foster system. She graduated high school in 2002 and joined the Navy, hoping to become a Navy Seal. When her application for Seal training was denied, she left the Navy after two tours out of bitterness over the rejection. She returned to Chicago to attend North Western University. In her freshmen year, she was taking Krav Maga classes and was approached by Anoka, MN Sheriff, Tom "Toxic" Thompson. He had been referred to Skyler by a fellow former Navy Seal. When Sheriff Thompson approached Skyler, he could feel that she was from a different time and see through her eyes a few of her memories that she had repressed coming through the portal. Something in Skyler's eyes and her unconscious memories resonated with the Sheriff's past as a Navy Seal. He sensed she was a woman out of time and place. After meeting Sheriff Thompson, he offered Skyler a highly confidential position - to keep watch over a young woman named Kerri Bloodstone. Thompson explained he was part of a council of elders, called the Annui, that had been safeguarding the Bloodstone lineage for centuries. Kerri had recently become estranged from her father and needed someone trustworthy at her side as she attended university. Sheriff Thompson asked Skyler to befriend Kerri, become her roommate, gain her deepest trust, and serve as a confidant. Additionally, she was to report back any unusual abilities or developments if Kerri began exhibiting special powers. Skyler agreed to the protection detail, the friendship, and being her roommate, but refused any spying or reporting on her new friend. Thompson reluctantly agreed to the compromise. In return, the Annui council, through Sheriff Thompson, paid all of Skyler's living and educational expenses through to graduation. She became very close with Kerri as they achieved their master's degrees together at university, with Skyler completing hers in Ethics. The backstory catches up with the present-day events of Bloodstone Legacy at the moment when Kerri receives the shocking news that her estranged father has unexpectedly committed suicide. Skyler's role now is to support Kerri through this devastating revelation, while protecting her from unseen forces that may harm her. Internal Conflicts Suffers from wanting to tell Kerri the truth about their friendship. She is both curious and fearful regarding her past. When she traveled from 1871 to 1994 she lost a lot of her memory. She only has confusing memories and is not aware of the fact of her time-traveling. Growing up without parents and the memory of parents, she does not feel any maternal instincts. She feels she would never be a mother or be able to love for fear of being abandoned. External Conflicts Dismissed as inconsequential by her appearance, but she is a weapons and martial arts master. Notes Skyler has taken on a bigger role than just best friend to Kerri. She was in the foster system and selected to befriend and protect Kerri. She pretends that her parents left her lots of money, but her funds come from the Annui council. Rick is instructed to keep an eye on her but does not know why. It turns out that the council is not as unanimous as first thought. There are factions within the council that disagree with how the council is doing things, such as Maude when she realized that Bryan had powers, though she didn’t understand where they came from (from killing Ruth), She worked to awaken the powers within Bryan, not realizing that he stumbled into the Nemracki and they were using him. Skyler is a free spirit. She is kinda like a yin-yang with her dark skin and bleached hair. She is not strictly heterosexual and not gay. She prefers the person rather than the gender. Her pronouns are she, but doesn’t judge when/if someone gets it wrong. She is a chameleon; she can look very much like a girl, stuff her hair under a hat, change her clothes, the way she walks, and she is a boy. She also has a very flexible voice, medium range, but can raise and lower it like a talented musician. Skyler possesses a rare psychic ability that allows her to manipulate what others perceive about her. She can choose to go entirely unnoticed if she wishes, almost becoming invisible to those around her. Or she can draw every eye in the room to her presence. This chameleon-like talent stems from her power to affect people's minds, controlling their awareness and focus. Intrinsically, Skyler does not worry about external validation or care what others think of her. This frees her to use her power however she sees fit, without hesitation or drain on her self-confidence. She understands her ability to slip into their subjective realities. The source of her superpower is the capacity to project emotions and subtle psychic suggestions to those nearby. If she wants to be ignored, she radiates an aura of insignificance. If she wants to charm, she beams charisma and appeal into their perceptions. This projecting empath ability allows her to sculpt what people feel when they look upon her, thereby influencing how they see her overall. She wields this psychic talent adeptly after years of practice. With fine control, she can shift from being the center of adoring attention to a completely forgettable face lost in a crowd within seconds. She moves through worlds seen and unseen on her own terms. |
